Tacos, Tune-Ups, and Top-Notch Rides
Jeff, our Fleet and Safety Manager at LEADER Worldwide, keeps our vehicles in top shape and running smoothly. With a military background and a passion for the Black Car industry, he brings a unique blend of discipline and enthusiasm to his role. In a recent Q&A, we sat down with Jeff to learn more about his journey, his love for cars, and what drives him to ensure every ride at LEADER is a safe and seamless experience. From his favorite local spot to eat to his dream garage, Jeff gives us an inside look into what makes his, and LEADER’s, wheels turn.
Q: First, what is your go-to karaoke song when no one’s watching (or even when they are)?
A: Honestly, I’m not much of a karaoke singer—I’ve never really had the voice for it! But if no one’s watching, I’d go for Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle”.
Q: What’s your background, and how did you get into the role of Fleet Manager at LEADER Worldwide?
A: I have a diverse background, starting with my first job ever as Cavalry Scout in the U.S. Army. After my military career, I explored various industries and eventually joined the Black Car industry in 2016. I quickly became passionate about the field and committed myself to learning as much as possible to excel in my roles. This drive to improve and expand my skills led me to an opportunity with LEADER Worldwide, initially as a Dispatch Manager. Over time, I took on the responsibility of managing LEADER’s fleet, along with DOT safety and compliance. Setting up fleet management and compliance systems from the ground up has been one of my most rewarding challenges, building on the knowledge I gained from my experience in a previous Black Car company, which has been invaluable in my role at LEADER.
Q: What’s your favorite local Kansas City spot for a bite to eat or to hang out?
A: My all-time favorite spot is the Fish Market in Liberty. It’s a true hidden gem, and they serve the most incredible smoked salmon tacos—they’re absolutely to die for!
Q: Vehicle appearance is a big deal for LEADER. How do you keep all the cars looking spotless and professional, especially when things get busy? Any cleaning supplies that you prefer.
A: Maintaining the pristine appearance of our vehicles is essential because our clients expect the highest level of service, which includes spotless, comfortable, and reliable transportation. This is truly a team effort at LEADER. Our dedicated chauffeurs play a key role by wiping down the vehicles after each client, and they often go through the car wash several times a day or do quick touch-ups between clients. It’s a coordinated effort between our chauffeurs, the dispatch team, and the chauffeur manager in the garage to uphold LEADER’s standards. Personally, I’m a big fan of Maguire’s spray products, which are ideal for quick, rinse-free cleaning. These products help us maintain that professional look, even when things get busy.
Q: As someone who loves cars, what’s your favorite vehicle in the LEADER fleet and why??
A: That’s a tough one. I’d say that our 2024 Mercedes Sprinter Executive is by far my favorite. It’s such a smooth ride and very comfortable for a small group, the interior is amazing and reminds me of Roles Royce but larger.
Q: What’s one maintenance task or tip you think everyone should know when it comes to keeping a car running smoothly?
A: Keeping up with scheduled maintenance and having a solid plan in place is essential. One key lesson I’ve learned is that many issues can be prevented by sticking to a regular schedule. This approach helps to avoid unnecessary costs by catching potential problems early, before they become more serious. I feel that’s why LEADERS fleet is the best in the city.
Q: LEADER focuses heavily on providing a safe ride. How do you ensure that all vehicles are in top condition safety-wise?
A: I’m grateful that LEADER invested in our upgraded fleet management software, which makes it easy to manage scheduling, maintenance, timelines, diagnostics, and more. Having instant access to this information is invaluable in keeping our fleet in top condition, allowing me to address potential issues before they escalate.
Q: What’s YOUR ultimate dream garage—money is no object, and you get to pick five cars. What’s in it?
A: I’m a huge car enthusiast, so narrowing it down to just five is a challenge! First on my list would be a 1971 Barracuda, ideally the same Canary Yellow convertible with leather interior that Don Johnson drove. Next, I’d pick a 1990 Camaro RS—I’m a big fan of its style. Third would be a Nissan GTR, followed by a lifted Chevy Silverado AT4. And for a bit of extra flair and speed, I’d add a Lamborghini Aventador to the mix.
Q: You’re a big sports fan. Do you see any similarities between managing a fleet and managing a sports team?
A: I’m a big fan of sports, and I see a lot of parallels between a sports team and a fleet. Just like a team relies on its players working together, a fleet depends on both vehicles and drivers to operate seamlessly. In a sports team, each player has a specific role, and similarly, each vehicle and driver may take on unique responsibilities depending on the client and trip. Success in both cases depends on coordination, strategy, and making the best use of resources. Running a fleet is very much a team effort, just like in sports.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and how has it shaped you?
A: In 5th grade, I had a teacher who wrote a personalized message for each student on the last day of school. Mine said, “Knowledge is the key to success.” At the time, I didn’t fully understand what he meant, but as I grew older, I came to appreciate it. Now, I strive to learn as much as I can from every source available.
Q: If you could give your 10-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?
A: It might sound tempting to invest all your earnings in Amazon stock or Bitcoin, but the real key is to pursue your passions, stay dedicated to your dreams, and keep focused on your goals. The journey won’t always be easy, but if you remain steadfast, you’ll eventually reach what you’re striving for. Trust in the plan that God has for you, and keep moving forward with faith.
